The City of Auburn Council will consider adoption of Auburn 2040: The Road Ahead on Tuesday, January 4, 2021 @ 6:00 PM in the Norman E. Yoder Council Chambers, Auburn City Hall, 206 East Ninth Street, Auburn, Indiana.
The City of Auburn Plan Commission will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at 6:00 PM in the Norman E. Yoder Council Chambers, Auburn City Hall, 206 East Ninth Street, Auburn, Indiana. At the Public Hearing, the Plan Commission will consider recommending the formal adoption of a new Comprehensive Master Plan titled, Auburn 2040: The Road Ahead developed in accordance with Indiana Code 36-7-4-500 Series.
The City of Auburn last adopted a Comprehensive Master Plan in 1987. Auburn 2040 is the outcome of a two-year community engagement process focused on creating a unified vision for future growth and development; developing policies to improve livability; establishing clear guidance for decision makers; and developing implementation strategies in a user-friendly document. Auburn 2040 includes the following chapters: Introduction, Community Profile, Recommendations, and Implementation. The document also includes goal statements and associated policies for Land Use, Arts & Parks, Downtown, Housing, Transportation, Local Government & Services, and Economic Development.

Next Steps: The final draft is tentatively scheduled to be presented to the Plan Commission at their December 14, 2021 meeting, @ 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 206 E Ninth Street which is open to the public. The Building, Planning and Development (BPD) Department and Auburn Plan Commission are holding an Auburn 2040 open house on Nov. 4, 2021, from 4-7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 206 E Ninth Street. The public is invited to stop by and learn more about Auburn 2040: The Road Ahead, the city’s new comprehensive plan—and the first update in more than 30 years. BPD staff will be on hand to listen to feedback and answer questions.
The fourth Steering Committee meeting was held on July 16th, where members reviewed a public engagement report with key themes and an overall vision statement for Auburn. These documents can be found under the Resource and About tabs, respectfully. Stay tuned as the project team takes these results and begins drafting the plan!
The Auburn 2040 Planning Team has been hard at work gathering input from hundreds of community members on your vision for the future of Auburn.
Engagement activities conducted thus far in the planning process include: robust online engagement opportunities, limited in-person activities, and a community survey (available both as digital and hard copies). This feedback will be instrumental in crafting final plan recommendations.
Key wants and needs identified through Auburn 2040 public engagement include:
- Expand and improve sidewalks
- Continue Downtown improvements and investment
- Support community events (especially the Farmers Market)
- Preserve and increase recreational amenities and trails
- Expand housing options
- Re-imagine commercial gateways and corridors
- Enhance dining, arts, and entertainment options

The City of Auburn formally launched Auburn 2040: The Road Ahead in late February 2020. This is the City’s effort to develop a new comprehensive plan for the community and we need your help!
Although in-person meetings and public engagement have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the planning team is moving forward with the process and is seeking your input on the future of Auburn. Updates related to potential in-person engagement late this summer and in the fall will be posted on www.auburn2040.com and the City’s social media pages, the City mobile app, and in the local newspaper.

The City of Auburn is currently accepting nominations for Auburn 2040 Steering Committee members.
Steering Committee members are integral in the comprehensive planning process. Auburn 2040 is a comprehensive plan for the community’s future which will serve as a roadmap to guide decision-making, set objectives, and develop policies around a range of topics including future land use, housing, transportation, parks and recreation, and economic development. Members provide feedback and direction on the plan, review and test materials, garner public interest in the plan, and represent their community throughout the process.
